"Sapienza" International Academy of Philosophy of Law

The "Sapienza" International Academy of Philosophy of Law works within the Department of Criminal, Philosophical-Juridical and Canon Law. It has no profit-making finality. Indeed, the principal aim is to preserve and enhance a significant part of the history of the University “Sapienza”, in Rome.

The genesis of the "Sapienza" International Academy of Philosophy of Law finds interest in keeping organic intercultural exchanges with other countries, in order to spread the Italian philosophical-juridical knowledge that has had its principal root in University of Rome “Sapienza". Furthermore, it is appropriate to encourage the work of scholars (also from abroad).  Since the foundation of the Institute of Philosophy of the Law by Giorgio Del Vecchio, many of them are attending the activities currently in progress in the Department of Studies of Criminal, Philosophical-Juridical and Canon Law, benefiting also of the library of Philosophy of the Law ' Giorgio Del Vecchio'.

The "Sapienza" International Academy of Philosophy of Law supports the on-line publishing of bulletins, periodicals and essays: this is meant to allow, without any economic burden on existing structures, a national and international spreading, keeping an activity that since the 1930s is known by the most esteemed philosophers of law and contributes to consolidate the prestige of the University of Rome ' Sapienza '.

The "Sapienza" International Academy of Philosophy of the law, within the Department of Criminal, Philosophical-juridical and Canon Law, resumes the commitment of spreading the philosophical-juridical culture already initiated by Giorgio Del Vecchio, Dean of the University of Rome in 1925 and founder in 1935 of the Italian Society of Philosophy of Law, which held the first assembly in the classroom of the academic Senate of the University of Rome, conceiving a statute approved by decree of 21 March 1936. In the same years, the publication of the International Journal of Philosophy of Law was launched, still today based in the premises of the former Institute of Philosophy of Law of the University of Rome "Sapienza" and widespread in Europe, North America, Latin America and Asian countries.

The work of Giorgio Del Vecchio and of the other Ordinaries who succeeded in the ownership of the chairs of philosophy of law has always been oriented to the education of Italian and foreign scholars, committed to confirm the prestige of the University of Rome "Sapienza".

The respect and resumption of this part of the history of "Sapienza" requires and legitimizes the continuation and enhancement of an activity that the "Sapienza" International Academy of Philosophy of law aims to make also through an annual calendar of seminars and workshops. It pursues the aim of consolidating its status of international Reference centre of philosophical-Juridical thought, enhancing the incidence of the activities promoted by Giorgio Del Vecchioand continued by his successors, who currently works in the Department of Criminal, Philosophical-juridical and Canon law studies, where he continues to have the International Journal of Philosophy of Law that counts among the members of his scientific board the most prestigious national and international scholars.
